Mestre Vieira
Guitarist and songwriter · 1934–2018
“Guitarrada is choro played on the guitar, with the Caribbean swing that came through the radio.”
Joaquim de Lima Vieira learned to play the mandolin and cavaquinho as a child in Barcarena. Listening to Caribbean radio stations that could be picked up in Pará, he began playing a mix of choro, carimbó, merengue, and cumbia on the electric guitar.
In 1978, he recorded *Lambadas das Quebradas*, considered the starting point of the guitarrada genre. The genre influenced the lambada and, decades later, gained a new generation of admirers in Brazil and abroad.
Mestre Vieira passed away in 2018. The club holds an annual tribute featuring guitarreiros from Barcarena and Belém performing his songs.
