2005: How the Clube dos Lisos Was Founded

A group of friends with no money, get-togethers at the founders’ homes, and a drawing of a pair of pants with empty pockets. The club’s origins, as told by those who were there.

The name came before the club. In Belém, “Liso” refers to someone who’s broke, and that’s how friends introduced themselves at the Friday gatherings at Reduto.

In 2005, the group decided to formalize the tradition: membership cards, informal bylaws, and one main rule—that a lack of money would never be a reason to be left out of the circle.

Liso has no money, but he has a tambourine.

The mascot, designed by cartoonist Biratan Porto, became the club’s symbol.
