Pinduca

Singer, songwriter, and bandleader · n. 1937
“Carimbó is the music of the caboclo. I just put it on the radio.”

Aurino Quirino Gonçalves, known as Pinduca, started out as a drummer at dance halls before forming his own band. Beginning in the 1970s, he electrified the carimbó, added brass and guitar to the curimbó, and created a sound that took over radio stations in the North and Northeast.

He recorded dozens of albums and also popularized the sirimbó and other dance variations. His decorated hat and colorful clothes became a trademark of his shows.

At the club’s Sunday luncheons, Pinduca is synonymous with a packed dance floor: different generations dancing to the same songs that used to play on their grandparents’ record players.
